What is Secobarbital?

Secobarbital is a barbiturate that is used as a sedative.

Important information:

Secobarbital can cause allergic reactions and may be habit-forming. Sleep will occur almost immediately after taking the drug.

Before taking this medicine:

Tell your doctor about any other medications or supplements you are taking. Secobarbital can affect oral contraceptives and pregnancy.

How should I take Secobarbital?

Pre-surgical secobarbital will be administered by a professional. When using it at home for short-term relief of insomnia, take it at bedtime.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Unless you have hours left to sleep, it is best to skip the dose.

What happens if I overdose?

You may stop breathing if you overdose, so call 911.

What should I avoid while taking Secobarbital?

Do not drive. Do not take the drug if you only have a short time to sleep.

Secobarbital side effects:

Mild side effects include poor concentration and upset stomach. Serious side effects include lightheadedness, nightmares, and slowed respiration and heart rate.

Secobarbital dosing information:

Secobarbital is taken in pill form, most often 100 mg once a day for insomnia, more for surgical sedation.

What other drugs will affect Secobarbital?

Any drug that produces drowsiness or sedation can compound the effect of secobarbital, including alcohol, cold medicine and antidepressants.
