What is Dilaudid?

Dilaudid is an opioid, or narcotic, taken to reduce moderate pain and severe pain.

Important information:

Dilaudid can be habit forming with long-term use.

Before taking this medicine:

Before taking dilaudid, patients should tell their doctor about opioid allergies or if they have asthma, a bowel obstruction or recently took an MAO inhibitor.

How should I take Dilaudid?

Extended-release dilaudid should never be chewed, broken or crushed, and liquid dilaudid should never be measured with a table spoon.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If the patient misses a dose, he should refrain from doubling up the dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdose symptoms include clammy skin, confusion, shallow breathing and a weak pulse. A patient who exhibits these symptoms should seek immediate medical care.

What should I avoid while taking Dilaudid?

Operating heavy machinery, driving and drinking alcohol should be avoided while taking dilaudid.

Dilaudid side effects:

Some of the common, minor side effects of dilaudid are flushing, dizziness, sweating and dry mouth.

Dilaudid dosing information:

The usual starting dose is 2 mg to be taken every 4-6 hours.

What other drugs will affect Dilaudid?

Muscle relaxers, tranquilizers and other opioids can affect dilaudid.
