Adderall

What is Adderall?

Adderall is a drug containing both amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, which are stimulants designed to affect the central nervous system. Adderall aims to treat conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy.

Important information:

Adderall should not be taken by individuals with cardiac conditions, heart disease, high blood pressure, or people using MAO inhibitors. Adderall can be habit-forming, which means that this drug should be taken as ordered by a doctor. IT should never be shared with another individual.

Before taking this medicine:

Discontinue use of MAO inhibitors 14 days before taking Adderall. If you are allergic to stimulant medications, or you have a condition such as heart disease that could interact negatively with Adderall, do not take it.

How should I take Adderall?

Adderall should be taken in accordance with your doctor’s directions. The dosage and frequency with which Adderall should be taken will depend on upon your unique circumstances. If you are taking Adderall XR or another extended-release form of Adderall, do not crush or chew it. Swallow the pill immediately.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Adderall, you should take it as soon as possible. The only exception is if it is late in the day. You should avoid taking it before bed, as it is a stimulant and may interfere with sleep.

What should I avoid while taking Adderall?

Avoid prolonged periods of stress, other stimulants, cough medications, MAO inhibitors and any other drugs that may perform similar functions to Adderall. Abuse can result in serious harm, which could range some seizures to death.

Adderall side effects:

  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Heightened heart rate
  • Mood changes
  • Nervousness
  • Sleeping problems
  • Stomach pain
  • Weight loss

 
Adderall may interfere with some medical tests. You should always inform your doctor when taking any tests so that these results can be best interpreted.

Adderall dosing information:

Between the ages of 3 to 5 years, 2.5 mg of Adderall should be taken in the morning.

Ages 6 to 12 should take 5 mg to 10 mg in the morning.

Ages 13 to 17 should take 10 mg one a day.

Maintenance doses will range from 5 mg to 10 mg in the early afternoon, but they should only be administered under the orders of a doctor.

Medications that can affect Adderall include:

  • Antacids
  • Antidepressants
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Cold or allergy medicines with decongestants
  • Lithium
  • Narcotics
  • Neuroleptics
  • Seizure medications
