What is Demerol?

Demerol is an opioid drug that is used to alleviate pain.

Important information:

Demerol is addictive and can suppress breathing to dangerous levels. It is not indicated for people with asthma.

Before taking this medicine:

Tell your doctor if you are using MAO inhibitors or have lung, liver or kidney disease.

How should I take Demerol?

Because of its addictive properties, Demerol should be taken strictly according to your doctor’s instructions. The pill may be taken with or without food, the liquid form is mixed with water.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take your next scheduled dose at its regularly scheduled time.

What happens if I overdose?

This is an emergency. Call 911 or the local poison control center.

What should I avoid while taking Demerol?

You should never consume alcohol with Demerol, including alcohol in other medicines or foods.

Demerol side effects:

Demerol may produce drowsiness, nausea, confusion, and slowed breathing and heart rate.

Demerol dosing information:

Demerol may be taken in pill or liquid form. It is most often taken in 50 mg to 150 mg doses three or four times per day.

What other drugs will affect Demerol?

Any drug that decreases your respiratory rate or produces drowsiness can be dangerous in combination with Demerol.
