What is Ambien?

Ambien is a sedative medication. It is prescribed to treat insomnia.

Important information:

Ambien can impair your reactions and thinking. You may still feel sleepy in the morning after you take Ambien. Wait until you are fully awake before you do anything that requires you to be alert.

Before taking this medicine:

Some Ambien tablets may contain lactose. Tell your doctor if you are lactose intolerant. You should also talk your doctor about other medications you are taking. Additionally, you should let your doctor know if you have kidney disease, sleep apnea, liver disease or a history of addiction or depression.

How should I take Ambien?

Ambien is intended for short-term use only. Do not take the medication for longer than six weeks without your doctor’s permission.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Ambien is taken at bedtime, so you are not likely to miss a dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Call the poison control center or seek medical attention immediately if you overdose.

What should I avoid while taking Ambien?

You should avoid taking Ambien while you travel. You should also not consume alcohol before taking Ambien.

Side effects of Ambien:

Common side effects include daytime drowsiness, headache, muscle pain and stuffy nose. Serious, but rare side effects include breathing problems, chest pain, depression and fainting.

Patients typically take 5 mg of Ambien before going to sleep. If 5 mg is not working, then the doctor may increase the dosage to 10 mg.

Ambien can interact with the following medications antidepressants, muscle relaxants, cold medication and pain medication.
