Clonidine

What is Clonidine?

Clonidine is a medication that treats high blood pressure, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, migraines, and certain types of pain.

Important information:

Clonidine is sold under the brand names Catapres, Duraclon, Kapvay, and Nexiclon.

Before taking this medicine:

Talk to your doctor about any allergies before taking Clonidine, because some people may have an allergic reaction to it.

How should I take Clonidine?

You should take Clonidine twice daily by mouth; the smaller dose is taken in the morning and the larger dose is taken right before bed.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if your next dose is very soon, skip the forgotten dose instead of taking extra.

What happens if I overdose?

A Clonidine overdose can result in CNS depression, causing slow breathing, a decreased heart rate, and loss of consciousness. An overdose can also cause hypertension, hallucinations, permanent heart defects, seizures, and comas.

What should I avoid while taking Clonidine?

Avoid taking clonidine with alcohol.

Clonidine side effects:

Clonidine side effects include upset stomach, headaches, tiredness, uneven heartbeats, dizziness, dry throat, and a skin rash.

Clonidine dosing information:

Clonidine dosage is adjusted based on unique patient needs, people may take anywhere from 0.1 to 2.4 mg per day.

What other drugs will affect Clonidine?

Clonidine can interact with tricyclic antidepressants, neuroleptics, and acetaminophen.
