Codeine
What is Codeine?
Codeine is an opiate, which means it belongs to a family of drugs derived naturally from the opium poppy.
Important information:
Codeine is used to treat pain. It is also called a narcotic and works by locking into the mu opioid receptors in the central nervous system. It is also a cough medication and was once added to cough syrups to treat coughs in children.
Before taking this medicine:
The doctor takes a medical history of the patient to find out if he or she has any disorders or diseases that might interfere with taking codeine. For example, people who have obstructive bowel disease or breathing problems shouldn’t take codeine. This is because codeine can cause the actions of the bowel and the respiratory system to slow down.
How should I take codeine?
Codeine is taken in pill or liquid form. It should be taken according to the doctor’s prescription.
What happens if I miss a dose?
A person who misses a dose should wait until it is time to take another dose. Missing doses with codeine is unusual since it is used to ease pain.
What happens if I overdose?
A person who overdoses on codeine should call 911 immediately.
What should I avoid while taking codeine?
Avoid taking medicines or substances that are central nervous system depressants. This includes alcohol.
Codeine side effects:
The most common are feelings of drowsiness or dizziness. The patient may also suffer nausea and vomiting, sweating and constipation. Some people develop a rash or itching skin.
Codeine dosing information:
For coughs, an adult starts with 15 milligrams of codeine every 6 hours. They should not exceed 120 milligrams a day. For pain, an adult starts at 30 milligrams every six hours. Codeine can also be injected or delivered intravenously. The dosage can also be titrated.
