Amytal

What is Amytal?

Amytal, also known by the generic name amobarbitol sodium, is an odorless, white, crystalline drug classified as a barbiturate derivative.

Important information:

Amytal is used to treat serious seizures like those due to epilepsy. It is also used to treat severe anxiety, as a hypnotic for psychotherapy, and may be administered as an anesthetic.

Before taking this medicine:

A prescription is required for Amytal. Tell your doctor about other medications you are taking.

How should I take Amytal?

Amytal is administered as an injection, in powdered form or as a liquid.

What happens if I miss a dose?

A missed dose may cause symptoms like anxiety or seizures. Contact your physician right away.

What happens if I overdose?

If you overdose, call your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

What should I avoid while taking Amytal?

Avoid becoming pregnant or nursing while taking this drug. Amytal should be administered to anyone over age 60 and young children.

Amytal side effects:

Common side effects are dizziness and drowsiness. Less frequently, patients become excited or irritable. They may be confused, sluggish, depressed, or have difficulty sleeping.

Amytal dosing information

Dosages must be adjusted to individual patients. The maximum adult dosage is 1 gram.

What other drugs will affect Amytal?

Amytal may interact with anti-convulsion medications or barbiturates.
