Methaqualone works by depressing the central nervous system and is used as a sedative. They are a Schedule I drug and cannot be legally purchased in the United States.

People should not drive or operate heavy or dangerous machinery when taking methaqualone. Women who are pregnant or nursing should also not take it.

Side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, cramps, rashes and itching. People also experience tingling in their appendages, fatigue, shallow breathing and slow heart rate. The drug can also lead to dependence.

Quaaludes come in different dosages, but first time users should avoid taking over 300 milligrams.
