Lortab

What is Lortab?

Lortab is a pain reliever that consists of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Acetaminophen is a mild over-the-counter pain medicine that enhances the pain relieving effect of the hydrocodone.

Important information:

Lortab is a narcotic drug that may be habit forming and should never be used for longer than prescribed. Misuse can cause addiction. Overdoses can be fatal.

Before taking this medicine:

Using Lortab during pregnancy can cause the baby to be dependent on the drug. Mothers should not breast feed while using this medicine because it can pass into breast milk. Individuals with liver disease or a history of drug or alcohol addiction should inform their doctors.

How should I take Lortab?

Lortab should be taken only as directed. Individuals who have been taking it for an extended period of time should discuss how to stop using it with their doctors to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Lortab may be prescribed to be taken as needed rather than on a regular schedule. Individuals who take it regularly should skip the missed dose if it is almost time to take it again.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose of Lortab can result in death. Therefore, emergency medical treatment should be sought immediately. Symptoms of Lortab overdose include slow heart rate, fainting, shallow breathing and excessive drowsiness.

What should I avoid while taking Lortab?

Alcohol should be avoided while taking this medicine. Driving or operating dangerous equipment should be avoided until the effect of Lortab on the body is determined. Since many over-the-counter medicines also contain acetaminophen, using them while taking Lortab can result in too much acetaminophen, increasing the risk of liver damage.

Lortab side effects:

Common side effects include dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, constipation, upset stomach or blurred vision. If a slow heartbeat or shallow breathing occurs, the doctor who prescribed it should be consulted.

Lortab dosing information:

Lortab is primarily prescribed in one of three strengths: 300 mg of acetaminophen with 5, 7.5 or 10 mg of hydrocodone. Frequency is usually one tablet every 4 to 6 hours.

What other drugs will affect Lortab?

Other narcotic pain medications, muscle relaxers, and medicines for anxiety or depression can cause serious side effects.
