Duodin
What is Duodin?
It is a narcotic pain reliever to manage acute pain.
Important information:
It contains hydrocodone and either acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Hydrocodone is a Schedule II Controlled substance and opiate that slows the central nervous system. It can be habit forming. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are used for pain, coughing, fever and swelling.
Before taking this medicine:
Patient should be aware of the side effects, withdrawal symptoms from missing one dose and take as prescribed. Increasing the dosage causes tolerance to its effects, abuse and addiction.
How should I take Duodin?
Generally one tablet or capsule is taken every four to six hours, not to exceed five tablets or capsules in one day. One tablespoon of liquid is taken every four to six hours, not to exceed six tablespoons in one day.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Missing a dose may cause withdrawal symptoms:
- chills
- diarrhea
- excessive perspiration
- high blood pressure
- increased heart beat
- insomnia
- irritability
- nausea
- nervousness
- stomach cramps
- vomiting
What happens if I overdose?
Acetaminophen or ibuprofen overdose symptoms include:
- jaundice
- liver damage
- nausea
- stomach pain
- vomiting
Hydrocodone overdose symptoms are:
- altered mental capacity
- constricting eye pupils
- decreased blood pressure
- irregular heart beat
- respiratory depression
- seizures
Patient is given naloxone to reverse the hydrocodone effects and N-acetylcysteine to minimize liver damage.
What should I avoid while taking Duodin?
Patients should not drink alcohol or grape juice otherwise the hydrocodone effects are intensified and potentially fatal.
Duodin side effects:
- blistered skin
- chest pain
- difficulty urinating
- disorientation
- fainting
- hearing loss
- inflammation of the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, face
- vertigo
Duodin dosing information:
Tablets/capsules containing hydrocodone/acetaminophen contain 300 mg/5, 7.5 or 10 mg
Tablets/capsules containing hydrocodone/ibuprofen contain 200 mg/2.5,5, 7.5 or 10 mg
Liquid includes 325 mg/7.5 mg of either pain reliever
