Dextromethorphan (DXM)

What is Dextromethorpan?

Dextromethorpan (DXM) is a cough suppressant used in popular cough syrups to help ease the discomfort of minor throat irritation. It can be found in both prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Important information:

One of the most important things to remember about this medication is that it should never be given to a child under the age of four years. The misuse of cough medicines in young children can lead to serious complications and even death.

If you are already taking any other prescription or over-the-counter cough medication, you should consult with your doctor or pharmacist before adding in a product containing DXM. Combining various types of cough suppressants containing this ingredient can lead to a potentially fatal overdose.

Before taking this medicine:

You should speak with your pharmacist or physician if you have chronic bronchitis or emphysema, as DXM will not treat coughs as a result of these two conditions.

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, speak with a physician before using DXM as it has been known to cause harm to unborn and breast-feeding babies.

If you are taking an MAO inhibitor, do not use any product containing DXM as life-threatening side effects can occur.

How should I take Dextromethorpan?

Because DXM is available in varying strengths, always follow the directions printed on the bottle of medication and use the enclosed measuring device to administer each dose. If the DXM is in the form of a lozenge, simply let it slowly dissolve in your mouth.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you should happen to miss a dose of this medication, simply resume taking it at the next scheduled time.

What happens if I overdose?

If you believe that you have overdosed on a medication containing DXM, contact a poison control center or seek emergency medical attention immediately.

What should I avoid when taking Dextromethorpan?

As with any medication, avoid drinking alcohol with DXM. Doing so can cause side effects that may impair your reactions or thinking processes. Do not take stimulants, such as caffeine pills, with this medication, or use it alongside any other over-the-counter or prescription cough medicine without permission from your physician.

Dextromethorpan side effects:

If you should experience dizziness, anxiety, nervousness, hallucinations, confusion, or shallow breathing, consult a physician at once.

Dextromethorpan dosing information:

Because each medication will contain varying amounts of DXM, always refer to the packaging label to determine how much you should take. Never take more than is indicated and measure each dosage carefully.

What other drugs will affect Dextromethorpan?

Certain herbal products can affect medications containing DXM. If you are taking any herbal products, antidepressants, or medications to treat high blood pressure or high cholesterol, notify your physician before taking a product containing DXM.
