Actiq
What is Actiq?
Actiq is a narcotic pain medication used to treat cancer pain. It is not meant for pain that is not cancer-related.
Important information:
Actiq is available via the Actiq REMS Program. Only certified pharmacists are permitted to distribute it.
Before taking this medication:
You must have tried other medications for pain relief without success before taking this medication. It may be habit-forming and shouldn’t be shared with anyone.
How should I take Actiq?
Actiq should be taken as prescribed. It can be taken as a pill, absorbed via a skin patch or a film that dissolves when placed in the mouth, given as a shot, by IV, or consumed as a lozenge.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Never take extra medication.
What happens if I overdose?
If you overdose, seek medical help right away. An overdose of Actiq may be fatal.
What should I avoid while taking Actiq?
Avoid taking other narcotic pain medications while taking Actiq. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice due to the risk of a potential reaction.
Actiq side effects:
Some patients may have an allergic response to Actiq, which may include difficulty breathing. Possible side effects include mild drowsiness, dizziness, depression, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, anxiety, or a slight rash.
Actiq dosing information:
Actiq is taken when needed to relieve pain, so you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are on a schedule, it will be set by your doctor.
What other drugs will affect Actiq?
Prescription and over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, and vitamins may affect Actiq. MAO inhibitors can also affect Actiq.
