Buprenorphine

What is Buprenorphine?

A prescription medication in the opioid (narcotic) analgesic class used to treat pain and opioid dependence. It is also used as a combination product with naloxone called Suboxone.

This medication may be habit-forming.

Before taking Buprenorphine:

Report any allergies or medical conditions, or if you are pregnant or nursing.

How should I take buprenorphine?

Available as an injection, sublingual tablet, lozenge, and patch. Take as directed.

What if a dose is missed?

Skip the dose if it is near the time of your next dose.

What if I overdose?

Overdose symptoms include severe drowsiness, shallow breathing, or pinpoint pupils. Seek medical attention in the event of an overdose.

What to avoid while taking Buprenorphine?

Avoid alcohol and other depressants while taking this medication.

Buprenorphine side effects:

Buprenorphine side effects include constipation, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting. More severe adverse events include shallow breathing, blue lips, and confusion.

Buprenorphine dosing information:

For pain: 0.3 mg injection at up to 6 hour intervals as needed. For opioid dependence: 4 to 24 mg per day as a sublingual tablet.

What other drugs will affect buprenorphine?

Depressants, sedatives, and some over-the-counter cold and allergy medications.
