Ativan
What is Ativan?
Ativan is primarily used for the treatment of anxiety and belongs to the benzodiazepine group. It has an effect on the chemicals in the brain that can become unbalanced, resulting in anxiety.
Important information:
Ativan should not be used during pregnancy as it will cross the placenta and affect the unborn baby. Alcohol should be avoided; its effects will be increased by this medication.
Before taking this medicine:
Patients should inform their doctors if they are allergic to any drugs, have a history of alcohol or drug addiction, or are suffering from glaucoma, breathing problems, or liver or kidney disease.
How should I take Ativan?
Ativan should be taken exactly as prescribed. taking it in larger amounts or for longer periods than instructed should be avoided.
What happens if I miss a dose?
If it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped. Otherwise, the missed dose should be taken as soon as possible.
What happens if I overdose?
Overdoses can be fatal. Emergency medical attention should be sought in the event of an overdose.
What should I avoid while taking Ativan?
Alcohol should be avoided. Any other medication that causes drowsiness can add to the effects of Ativan. Driving should be avoided until the effect the medicine has on the individual has been determined.
Ativan side effects:
Serious side effects include confusion, thoughts of suicide, hostility, hallucinations, light headedness or fainting. Less serious side effects are drowsiness, forgetfulness, nausea, blurred vision, insomnia or a skin rash.
Ativan dosing information:
For anxiety, Ativan is typically prescribed in doses of 1-3 mg 2-3 times per day up to 10 mg.
What other drugs will affect Ativan?
Barbiturates, MAO inhibitors, narcotics and antidepressants can have an effect on Ativan. The doctor should be informed if any of these drugs are used.
