Antabuse

What is Antabuse?

Antabuse blocks metabolism of alcohol and creates extremely unpleasant side effects if alcohol is consumed while taking Antabuse.

Important information:

Antabuse should be used in conjunction with other treatments for alcoholism. It should never be given to someone without that person’s knowledge. Consumption of alcohol while using Antabuse can lead to death.

Before taking this medicine:

Do not take Antabuse if you have consumed alcohol in the last 12 hours, including alcohol from mouthwash, cough medicine, cooking wine, or certain kinds of desserts.

How should I take Antabuse?

Take the full dose once per day.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency care immediately.

What should I avoid while taking Antabuse?

Do not consume alcohol in any form. If you suspect you have become pregnant, discontinue Antabuse and consult your doctor immediately.

Antabuse side effects:

Common side effects include a metallic taste in the mouth, loss of libido, a skin rash, and fatigue. Antabuse may cause liver disease.

Antabuse dosing information:

Most patients take 125 to 500 mg daily.

What other drugs will affect Antabuse?

Avoid using metronidazole or paraldehyde while using Antabuse. Antabuse can interact with a large number of medications, so inform your doctor of all of the medications that you take before starting Antabuse.
