Methadone

What is Methadone?

Methadone is a narcotic used as a pain reliever; it also reduces withdrawal symptoms for those addicted to narcotics.

Important information:

You should not use methadone if you have breathing problems or paralytic ileus.

Before taking this medicine:

Talk to your doctor about preexisting conditions, especially heart and respiratory conditions. Also discuss with a doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.

How should I take Methadone?

Methadone is taken by mouth, by either dissoluble tablet or liquid.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If using methadone for pain, take the missed dose as soon as you remember to do so.

If using it for addiction, wait until the following day to take the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdose on methadone can be fatal and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of overdose include fatigue, muscle weakness, clammy skin, loss of consciousness, and slow heartrate.

What should I avoid while taking Methadone?

Alcohol should be avoided. Grapefruit and related byproducts have also been known to interact negatively with methadone.

Methadone side effects:

Side effects include dizziness, nausea, sweating, and fatigue.

Methadone dosing information:

Dosages should be administered exactly according to doctor instruction. You should not stop using this medicine suddenly or change the dose on whim.

What other drugs will affect Methadone?

medicines that treat seizures, blood pressure, HIV/AIDS, and heart rhythm problems can interact with methadone, in addition to MAO inhibitors.
