What is Levacetylmethadol (LAAM)

It is a man-made opioid similar to methadone but acts like morphine. Opioids manage pain, but this drug is a Schedule II Narcotic Controlled Substance to treat adults who are addicted to opioids like heroine.

Important information:

This drug is highly addictive and only permitted in government-regulated treatment programs in approved clinics and not typically for home use.

Patient should be aware of the side effects and take when prescribed by their doctor.

How should I take Levacetylmethadol (LAAM)?

This drug is only taken two to three times per week. Its properties stay in the patient’s body for 72 hours.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Doses are administered in a clinic. If a patient misses a scheduled dose, the doctor will adjust both the dosage and schedule.

What happens if I overdose?

  • clammy, cold skin
  • constricted eye pupils
  • difficulty breathing
  • disorientation
  • fainting
  • fatigue
  • heart attack
  • low blood pressure and heart rate
  • nervousness
  • restlessness
  • sleep apnea
  • vertigo
  • weakened muscles

What should I avoid while taking Levacetylmethadol (LAAM)?

Patients should not drink alcohol while taking this drug otherwise severe reactions affecting the central nervous system may occur.

Levacetylmethadol (LAAM) side effects:

  • anxiety
  • constipation
  • cotton mouth
  • depression
  • difficulty breathing
  • irregular heartbeat
  • sedation
  • flu symptoms like body aches, nausea, vomiting

Levacetylmethadol (LAAM) dosing information:

Liquid bottles with 120 or 500 mL containing 10 mg/mL concentration. Generally the first dose is 20 to 40 mg and then adjusted according to doctor’s orders. Dose may be higher but jot to exceed 120 mg if the patient has been unsuccessful with a methadone treatment program.

What other drugs will affect Levacetylmethadol (LAAM)?

Patients taking this drug cannot take Sporanox that is generic for Itraconazole for fungal infections or Detrol LA that is generic for Tolterodine for overactive bladders.
